PROVINCE-WIDE SANITIZATION SOLUTION LAUNCHED

On Wednesday 1 April 2020, Gauteng Government officially launched and kick-started province-wide Sanitization programme in Alexandra Township, as part of ongoing efforts to curb and combat the spread of the invincible  Coronavirus.
The launch was led by the MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and CoGTA Lebogang Maile and MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environemnt Morokane Mosupyoe, at Helen Joseph Women’s Hostel in Alexandra, anchored on Decontamination of public areas.

Today’s sanitization of the Women’s Hostel and other informal settlements in Alexandra forms part of  ongoing measures by the current ANC-led provincial administration to safeguard the rights of vulnerable and poor communities against exposure to harmful  environment conditions which could arise out of this invincible pandemic.

“This shows our seriousness as government to fight this invincible pandemic working closely with our communities. We are emboldened by the fact that our people are embracing this intervention. We will be coming back to this particular hostel to deal with the squalid conditions our live under here”, said MEC Maile.

MEC Maile continued “we are pleased that our people are now beginning to adhere to the lockdown rules, as determined by our President Cyril Ramaphosa. Our presence here is also about raising awareness amongst the community and call of them to cooperate with the measures pronounced by government”.

The province-wide Sanitization solution is about Decontamination of Public Areas, Fogging of Public Buildings and Direct Household Sanitization, primarily targeted at high density dwelling areas such as Townships, hostels, informal settlements as well as places of transit and trade.

Through this initiative Gauteng Government seeks to drive waste minimization through re-use/refill of sanitization disbursement containers and promote social and physical distancing – making the much needed sanitizers accessible in local wards and informal settlements.

According to MEC Mosupyoe “social distancing remains a challenge especially in places where people have been thrown together like at this Hostel, so effective hygiene is critical lowering the infection curve in such areas”.

Furthermore,  more than 46000 households in Alexandra were targeted through a network of over 160 GAUTENG COVID19.
