Jonathan Groenewald known by his stage name 2J Harmonix has never allowed obstacles to get in the way of his dreams. He is a rapper who is known for his thought provoking lyricism.
JONATHAN ‘ 2J HARMONIX’ GROENEWALD
Born in Pretoria, the city dubbed Capcity Rapcity, the wheelchair bound rapper has moved up the lyrical food chain with his hard hitting metaphors and brow raising statements. He was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) at the age of 2. MD is group of muscle diseases that results in the increasing weakening and breakdown of skeletal muscles over time
Being an introvert without friends, he began to jot down his emotions in the form of aggressively charged rap lyrics and poetry in order to let go of his negative views on life. His outlet became his passion, which eventually caused him to break out of his shell and publicly express himself at poetry sessions and corner ciphers.
2J Harmonix is not only a rapper, he is a motivational speaker and has been a proud Casual Day ambassador since 2013. He says this has afforded him an opportunity to motivate others to not lose sight of their dreams despite whatever obstacles they might have to overcome or whatever disabilities they have.
“The knowledge I’ve gained since being an ambassador has greatly enriched me. We are all individuals with our own strengths and weaknesses. This is one of the most important life lessons I have learned. It helps me to be more open about my condition and to understand others who have to face their own kinds of obstacles
He released his debut album, Motivational, in 2015 and he is currently working on a new album, Throne on Wheels.
Today his music bares a more positive message, highlighting the bittersweet nature of a disabled artist and the human instinct to overcome adversity. “I’m unstoppable,” is a tagline many would hear him say, and his goal is that the world should hear his story and be motivated. Giving up is not an option!
His colourful achievements include performing at Africa’s biggest hip- hop festival Back to the City in Johannesburg on Freedom Day. In 2015 he performed at the iStart2Sing Festival.
